Working as an SEO consultant is similar to an odd job worker. It is still hard to believe that someone could make a steady job contract working as full time SEO consultant in any company. First of all, the limitation of SEO knowledge in decision makers takes huge role here. They don’t understand that SEO is one of the fastest evolving jobscope compared to any other jobs in the Online Marketing market. There are limited changes happened in Adwords, Facebook, Twitter and other paid ads. It is mainly because the service providers are making money out of it and willing to improve their service further to simplify the client’s worries.
As for SEO role, search engines keep modifying their algorithm just to make sure that no SEO expert out there that could hack into their algo and get first position to get commercial benefits to their clients in shortest period of time without following guidelines mentioned in Google SEO basic PDF (Please google if you can’t find the ebook – it’s a free ebook which get updated frequently by Google). Google as a lead search business keeps modifying about 40-80 search algo changes each month to provide better user experience for their users as a free service. SEOs tries hard to learn the tricks that used to work but not anymore and continue finding new tricks that is still not yet updated by Google algo (or soon to be updated algos) and convince the clients to use it while they can.
Most of the time, it is so difficult to convince the client based on the “experience” or “magical” words without proper numbers. Who can promise the positions of SERP ranking in Google organic? Only they can promise a return of investment in SEO. Whoever can promise a SERP ranking in Google organic are those companies that you would really want to avoid. They can be very convincing and manipulative and you must be extremely worried about the type of links they creating for you. Being an SEO consultant is not only to keep our investors notified about the latest move or trend but also to make sure the web properties of clients are not effected by current or any new algo updates which only Google knows.
Suddenly, SEO becomes more expensive and riskier compared to Adwords. Why? What makes SEO life more complicated? Is it SEO expert themselves who keep finding tricks to get Google frequently update their algo? Or, is it Google that wants to push more Adwords sales by making investors reduce their investment from SEO. Either way, SEO is slowly becoming a boring industry as continuous algo and chasing Matt Cutts videos or Twitter for short radar update ridiculously changing the SEO game. SEO supposed to be more professional industry a little more transparency. Does Google have a list of algo updates that they shared publicly collected and shared with all webmasters? At least, does Google notify the webmasters on Google webmaster tools on any major update that effect the website owners?
Of course, there are plenty of room for improvement in terms of communication but chasing algos and short tweet of radar update from Matt Cutts are just getting boring and not exciting anymore as it used to be. So, Google ladies, please come up with a proper way of communication in sending this algo updates. It’s no push the panic button for the whole world, just send the affected site’s owner an email of where they need to fix in order to regain their positions back. That matters most, in my opinion.
