Creating a blog or website is often times a very exciting, challenging, and rewarding endeavor to take on. You literally start with nothing and build it into a full scale business that can bring tons of great information, products, and services to hundreds, maybe even thousands of people each and every month. Sometimes, however, among all of the excitement and hard work that comes with creating your own masterpiece is the simple of mistake of forgetting about the basics that got you to where you are today.
Many often take the basic things involved in building a website for granted, which end up not being so basic. While your basking in the glory of the success of your blog or website, don’t forget about the basics of SEO that got you there in the first place. If you do, it might just come back to bite you in the butt.
1. Content
Creating great content is one of the most important aspects of building a great blog or website because it is what attracts visitors. It is also one of the things that search engines look for the most as well because after all, search engines want to provide their users with valuable content, which is why they will thank you for providing it by awarding you better rankings in search results.
2. Internal Linking
Internal linking is one of the most basic and fundamental strategies in the SEO arena. It involves linking one page of your website or blog to another via a hyperlink. Internal linking is used to show importance or relevance between certain pages.
3. Optimize your site for search engines
There are a number of steps involved in the process of optimizing your site for search engines including creating H1, H2, and H3 tags for the most important phrases that you wish to target, adding alternate text for images that are displayed, creating original and creative content for your pages, and creating meta tags which are used to indicate what type of information can be found on each every page of your blog. These are some of the fundamental aspects of creating a well optimized site for search engines.
4. Build backlinks
In order to increase the popularity of your blog or website you have to let people know that it actually exists. One of the ways of doing so is by creating backlinks which are hyperlinks that point back to your pages from a completely different blog or website. This is another basic principle that is used to quantify your level of popularity which is used in determining your rank in search results. One common misconception that many web developers have is the fact that more links equals better rankings, which isn’t always necessarily true. There are far more factors than just how many backlinks you have. The quality of the links that point back to your site also play a factor, meaning the higher the quality of the link pointing to your site, the better.
5. Check your stats
One final point to keep in mind is that while you are optimizing your blog or website, don’t lose track of how it is actually performing. Keep tabs on your visitor statistics to see whether or not your hard work is paying off. If something that you did to your blog or website didn’t provide any benefit from a traffic standpoint, then perhaps you will want to focus your efforts on more rewarding tasks.
