Search engine optimization with regards to images is something that is often overlooked by most beginners in SEO. Although it’s easy to place SEO in the places of your images on your website, it’s rather an alternative to creating content.

This article will highlight the importance of images in SEO and how to optimize images for search engines as a beginner.

File Name

Rarely done, file names of images are important when it comes to creating images that are search engine optimized.
Search engines are not able to read the content within images so rather they look at the file names of the images. Correctly label your images in their filenames with their accurate names or descriptions. Make sure that your filename contains the keywords that are being used in the content of your website.

Although there aren’t any preferences, one example of an image that is correctly optimized is: file-name.jpg. The use of dashes makes the file name easy to read for both search engines and humans.

Alt Tag

This is a method used in tagging your images with accurate descriptions. These were created as aid for those who are visually impaired. Alt Tags can now be used in the SEO techniques. The Alt tags will not only benefit you through SEO but rather it will make your website friendly for those that are visually impaired and these people will often visit your website.

Place a keyword rich description within the HTML parameters of your image; this may describe the image or rather the action that is displayed within the image.

Title Tag

The title tag is useful in tagging your images and ensuring that they are SEO ready. As you hover over an image the title is often displayed, this is the title tag and it can also be used to place additional info. Although this is not as important as the file and alt tags they are however deemed necessary for SEO.

Design your HTML in a way that it includes a title tag and then fill it in with keywords whilst precisely describing the image. You can also include additional information so that when people do hover over your images, you are able to impart a story into their minds.

Image Size

This does not need to be given much attention as compared to the above mentioned though it is important if you do want the images to show up on the Google images. “Google images” is responsible for indexing millions of web images on the internet. Google wants to provide users with quality images hence the large images are those that are displayed.
