Starting a new business online is often a difficult task because there is millions of competition which already existed with established platform. Unlike offline advertising, online advertising can be done easily if we know the right steps. The first of all is choosing right set of keywords for our new business. Keywords are the key value in success for any online business. Selecting wrong set of keywords can put us in loss. We may not get the clients or conversion needed to support our business in long term. Highly competitive keywords are not only meant for big fish, but also for newbies. We can target for high competing keywords if it provides excellent conversion.
Let’s get down to the list of keywords that we can target. First of all, find one keyword phrase that has high competition and converts well. For example, if you sell “debt consolidation” consulting service, choosing the main core of your service keyword like “debt relief, debt consolidation, debt settlement, debt recovery” type of keywords can be your primary keyword. Choose any one or two of highly competitive keyword to be your main target for long term goals. All you campaign should include these keywords. Do not expect to see overnight ranking boost for these keywords. Remember, you are competing with highly competitive keywords where thousands of debt related companies would have done years of SEO campaign to dominate top rankings.
Make sure to include your high competitive keywords in domain name and meta title to get quick SEO benefits and ranking possibilities. You may be able to get top 1000 ranking by just adding your keyword in domain and meta title. That is a good start for a highly competitive keyword. Indexing and ranking part is always comes with routine of back links. So, creating more contents and back links is the key to push your current ranking to top. Also, interlinking all your internal pages with this keyword is essential. We may not able to attract back links from the beginning phase. The only back links that we can generate is from internal links. This will allow all your internal pages to get decent PR spread and ranking too.
Next, you should list down at least 10 low competitive keywords. These keywords are easy to rank compared with earlier version. We should concentrate more keywords in low competitive keywords to supplement traffic from one high competitive/traffic keyword. Using these keywords in content section, meta descriptions and link building can help us to rank faster. It also help our link building campaign doesn’t look like spamming because it will be obvious if all our back links anchors with same keyword. A blend of keywords as anchor in back links will give more natural look for our back link profile in search engine view. Thus, it will give greater impact in our overall ranking (both low competitive and high competitive keywords). This will also help us not to get caught in spam net with aggressive back links that looks unnatural.
How do you know the keyword is converting well? Of course, it may take months or years of constant SEO link building and optimization to get our site ranking up in Google and other top search engines to draw relevant traffic. But, if the traffic does not convert in to customers, subscribers, high bounce rate, etc, then we may have targeted wrong set of keywords. In simple words, all our effort and investment to get rank for keywords that not converting well will be in vain. Imagine of spending $20k on SEO for last 2 years and you able to rank top for one highly competitive keyword but not able to make any money from it. Make use of Google Adwords to test the water first on your list of targeted keywords after onsite optimization like meta tags, keyword density, interlinking, etc. This will give a brief conclusion of your future conversion after reaching top ranking for those keywords using SEO. If the results are good, then you should experience better conversion and good business with those keywords. If the results are bad, then it is time to replace your keywords.
