Bad Backlinks Criteria

Topics: Link Building

Backlinks are supposed to help your website rank higher with the search engine optimization. However, some will not be of help to you since they use the wrong criteria. Some of the backlinks that you should totally avoid using on your website or blog are: pages that have links that are inside frames- this will not usually pass the PR and they can be very bad since they can divert some of your traffic to other websites. Links from framed pages will not help us to increase page rank or SERP ranking. Usually, these links are blocked in robots. Even though, it may not carry nofollow tag, it will still not pass any value. Using plugins like Search Status on Firefox can help us to detect this too.

You should also try and avoid backlinks that are free for all. This is because they usually lead to many sites, some of them are not reviewed, and it many lead to bad quality sites or blogs. Usually, sites that link to all websites tend to be in general niche. It is not in specific niche site, thus your back links value also drops. Getting a link from relevant page carries more weight compared to back links from non-relevant page. Plus, general pages will have links to some high risk sites like adult, gambling or pharma related sites which will lead to heavy penalty as well. So, having our site in this neighborhood is like inviting penalty from Google.

You also should avoid giving links to unrelated sites because of the same reason. This could be linked to your website and you could lose a huge crowd as they may think that your website is also not up to the standard. This could also lead to spam links that could be very irritating to your users. They may also lead to other websites that are not related and this could be harmful to your website as you would be pushing away your market to go to other sites that are not even related to your own. Usually, this kind of links will not help our ranking but may lead to penalty. Some may use this kind of dirty tricks to bring down the competitors. Trust me, you may help your competitors in gaining slight increase there. Instead of building bad back links to our competitor’s site to knock down ranking, we can create some extra strength back link value to our site that will eventually put us in a greater height and distance from other competitors.

You should be careful when you are using the backlinks as they might be directing people to bad neighborhoods such as drug or pornography sites. You may find that some of them are even banned by the search engines and this would be very bad for the image of your site. You can also fall into the trap of a triangular linking scheme which implies that you have to link to a website if it has been linked to you. This can be very dangerous as you can be banned or penalized. You can also get mirror websites which will not be of any benefit to your site and this can also be banned. Avoid any 2 way, 3 way, 4 way, etc type of link exchanges and concentrate in getting one way back links. There are various ways to get one way back links these days. You can start with article submission on article directories, blogs, forums, etc. I personally believe that a link from content section carries the highest weight in back links.

  1. Craig says:

I was always under the impression that you arent penalized if a link to your site appears on a blacklisted or “bad” sites, just that the link is ignored since it is not easy to control who places reference to your site on their own. My understanding is that it is important what links you place on your own site; that’s what can get you into trouble.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

  2. Atniz, I am just wondering if this would be the case, there’s a big possibility that your competitor will sabotage you by doing those “bad linking” methods, correct me if I am wrong. .
