To get good ranking with the search engines, you will have to choose your keywords carefully so that you can achieve this without a problem. Wrongly choosing keywords will lead to slower success rate or some may not even able to get good ranking due to heavy competition. Usually, short keywords will have high competition both in competing pages and average search volumes. Top 100 sites will have strong back links profile and onsite optimization. We may take months or years to reach even top 100 sites for highly competitive keywords. It doesn’t mean that if we manage to get good ranking for short keywords, we will get more business. We need to target high converting keywords to increase business prospects. If we manage to get 10k visitors per day but not gaining any conversion in business, then it is a bad keyword to target.

The first thing you need to is look for a keyword that has two to four word phrases. This should be words that describe what you offer in simple language. You can use general keywords although they are likely to be more competitive and might not convert too well. You should ensure that they are specific as most people usually look for specific things. You can use a more general term on the home page then narrow down to specific terms on the inside pages. If you have enough funds, you can try looking at conversion rate by using Google Adwords. If your traffic referred from PPC advertisement is converting well, then it should work similarly on SEO as well. Let it be long tail keywords that have low average search volume. But, if this keyword contains highest converting value for your business, then you should choose it as your primary keyword in campaigns.

You should avoid using single word keywords as they are not a good choice for optimizing. This is because they are normally too broad and they can be too competitive. This is not also easy to rank as three word phrases are normally easy to rank than the one word keyword. There is also some highly competitive 3 words keyword like “make money online”, “work at home”, etc. As long as the competing pages is low and have high average search volume, this considered as a good keyword selection. Using free tools like Google Keyword External Adwords tool can give rough competition figure and average CPC advertiser pays. Higher CPC ensures that you will have higher opportunity to earn big money. As much as you should not use specific words you should also not use that are too broad as this can reduce the traffic that you will get on your site.

You should also avoid terms that are too specific as they can cause your work not to be ranked correctly. You should also try and use words that are popular as these are likely to generate more traffic than if you use unpopular words that are not familiar with people. Using words that are not popular will only waste your efforts as no one will search for keywords that you have used. You should also ensure you use the correct word order which makes sense so that it can be easy to search. Your keywords should also be relevant to what you offer so that they can direct people to your site without any problem. Sometimes, many of us tend to choose wrong set of keywords. Having high number of competing pages and low average search volume is bad selection in keyword. Your competition will be similar to those high volume keywords but only to attract low number of traffic. This could be highly converting keywords where many competitors actively competing but it will be a disaster for a new company to tap into this kind of keywords.
