Do You Make These Costly Website Design Mistakes?

As you know, just about all businesses on the web need a website – usually. But if you do, how would you be able to make those product/service sales? And of course you’ll need some mechanism to collect customer data such as email addresses and other info. There’s much more involved than only having a website before you can begin earning money with it. Your website needs to be able to convert traffic into customers – that’s what you need. Before starting, it’s normal for people to get some kind of vision, or idea, of the kind of website they want to build. Do you know if your vision resembles what would be a profitable site? We want to offer some design tips that can help you make the most out of your vision.

Don’t assume that the code you are using is correct until you verify it. Many internet marketers use free website templates, but to give your site a unique appearance you’ll have to make some changes to the code. This is not hard and does not require any advanced knowledge of coding.

However, it’s easy to make little mistakes, so you should always check for things like typos or breaks in the code. If you have a problem loading your website, or if it does not look the way it should, it could be because the coding was not correctly entered. Check your site through the CSS Validator to make sure you aren’t missing some major mistakes.

Be careful about overdoing it with fonts. When most of us start out with website building we give in to the temptation to use a lot of different fonts. You have to keep in mind that visitors to your website will find it harder to read if you use too many fonts. If you want your website to look professional, don’t use more than one or two fonts. Whatever fonts you do choose, make sure that they are easy on the eyes of visitors. Complicated or fancy fonts may look artistic, but they will not serve you well. Your most important goal is to make everything you write easy for visitors to understand. Don’t sacrifice readability for artistic variety.

Popup windows are another “in your face” kind of device that many visitors won’t appreciate.

Popup windows actually cover up your site’s content, which your visitors are hopefully there to see (they did not come to immediately give you their personal information, as these popups usually demand), and they can be hard to close. It’s not a good idea to force your visitors to view things like popups when they enter your site. This is the kind of website feature that could be preventing you from making many sales!

Don’t use popup windows to keep people from leaving your site either. If someone wants to click away from your site, let them go. If they’ve already decided to go, you can’t force them to stay by making them deal with extra popup windows. This is the kind of practice that will make it less likely your visitors will ever return.

Once you get started, you’ll find that it’s not very difficult to make a quality website. It’s really just a matter of taking the time to do it right. The most profitable websites are those that look the best and are easy for visitors to read and navigate. It’s not sufficient to just build a website. It’s necessary to have a good website if you want to succeed as an internet marketer.

The biggest mistake I’ve made is relied too heavily on Google for my traffic which can really stink if you fall out of their favor.

I really appreciate the advice about checking the code on CSS validator as sometimes, free blog templates just don’t load properly.

And I hate pop ups too. It is not only irritating but sometimes they contain malware too.

  5. I hate pop up windows, they annoy the hell out of me, I always think with my blog, that if I don’t like something then why would anyone else want to see it ;)
