Internet service providers (ISP), especially TM boasted that they are capable to provide 1GB/s Internet connection speed to users. It has been the famous talk among many Internet entrepreneurs and full time work from home individuals. At first, I thought Malaysia is also as good as US because they also give importance to Internet connection to drive business, same like Google ISP services proposed in Greenville for 1GB/s Internet connectivity. After, they have introduced the package details, I seriously doubt that they can even get close to this giants. Getting 1GB/s Internet connection is not cheap as what they have claimed.
Lets debunk the same old techniques used by Telekom Malaysia (TM) to introduce 1GB/s Internet connection with some old tricks which have not truly benefited our people:
1. Under TM
When are they going to learn that TM service is not up to the standard. Their Internet connection gets one of the worst review in Global market. You can see the average start in Speedtest for Malaysia at 2/5 ranking ranked by users of Malaysian Internet users; where majority is from Streamyx customers. Introducing revolution with bad rapport company does not help our people. We need some new wing or company that offers clean and strong service compare to same old TM.
2. Why Always PJ, SJ, TTDI
Whenever new technology introduced, why they have to start with towns like PJ, SJ, TTDI and not more rural type of cities. Introduction may not have best capabilities and they need to learn more about their new technology before going wild. For example; most companies will introduce beta version before making it to full working version. But, here in TM, they always introduce their latest innovative products to condensed area like PJ, TTDI, etc. If you are residing in much rural area like Sitiawan or Sungai Petani, you might need to wait for a year or more to test this tech. This is actually forcing Internet entrepreneurs to move to urban area.
3. Expensive
First, I thought they are going to introduce 1GB/s connection to all users at affordable rate. Now, they don’t even have this package for home users. With current rate like $80 to get 20MB/s connection, will pretty much lead to higher rate for 1GB/s even if it is available. So, why are the big marketing words like offering 1GB/s in their HSBB campaign? I am sure you will feel the same when you look at the package details from TMPoint outlets.
4. Bye Bye Home Users
I am one of the least individual that waits eagerly for 1GB/s Internet connection to my home. I can’t think of the potential of my business growth or implementation of ideas with 1GB/s. All that have crashed when I look at the pricing and package details from TM for HSBB. There are no 1GB/s line offered for home users. Maximum of 20MB/s at approximately $80/month is the max speed offered for home users. I can’t imagine rate for 1GB/s if it even available. So, the dream of becoming Malaysia’s top Work From Home Millionaire just got shattered.
5. Slow Overseas Download Rate
I am not sure whether overseas upload rate is slow or Malaysia’s download cable is congested. Whenever my Internet connection get slow, I don’t have any problem loading local hosted websites like Maybank2u. But, I may need to wait for hours to load several pages that is hosted in overseas. Streamyx specialist always put the blame that it is common to have slow loading on overseas hosted pages or maybe some undersea fiber cables got snatched. Before charging so high on packages with monthly subscription, why not spend some real cash to upgrade that old fiber cables.

Perhaps it would be useful to clarify whether you are referring to 1 gigabyte connections (1GB) or to a 1 gigabit connection (1Gb). I strongly suspect you refer to the latter (1Gb).
Curious that you are campaigning for a 1Gb connection when the average speed barely hits 1Mb/s in Malaysia. I recently visted Malaysia (I’m from the UK) for holiday and was appalled by the near 3rd world speeds of a country with an alledged Multimedia Super Corridor – perhaps its definition got lost in local translation)
1Gb is only being introduced in Korea in 2012; assuming you meant 1Gb (1GB connections only existing in la-la land), do you not think it ambitious to campaign for a 1Gb connection with average speeds barely hit 1Mb. I
Malaysia should be providing high speed broadband (by which I mean ADSL 2+ which would give up to 20Mb connections). I am not in IT, perhaps you could elaborate further on why the wish to run(or teleport rather!) before one can walk.
Drew, they have introduced 1GB program (Unify) but not exactly what it claims to be. The highest we can get is 20MB. Not all the areas covered. But, they are slowly introducing to new areas. I guess, it may take 2-3 years time for all Malaysians able to use speed up to 20MB. My speed is 4MB. 1MB is the most commonly used connection here. 4MB considered like premier customer in TM. So, I must admit that it is still slow compared to Korea or UK. I guess that is a strong reason why most Net techchie migrates.
I can not believe the speeds you’ve got already! Here in South Africa we have 384kbps, 512kbps and 4mbps….that is sloooooooooooooow! We are only now getting unlimited bandwidth packages. Most of us are still paying per GB, and it is not cheap.
We have considered virtual hosting to speed up foreign downloads, have you considered that option at all? Almost like how Tucows use to do it with different mirrors.
