I'm not convinced that no-follow links have no SERP value. I will conduct an experiment: i want to get only no-follow links for a new domain and see if i get some results.
I'll let you know the conclusion

The only benefit of nofollow link is traffic. There are no benefits in SEO for Google.

Id argue that nofollow through links do have value based on any additional traffic they bring to your site.

When I work on my link building campaign, I will get no-follow backlinks from site that are related to my niche. If the site has high traffic flow, it will deliver me potential readers. Furthermore, it is good to mix up your backlinks from a variety of sources. It looks more natural and search engines seem to trust sites that have natural backlinks.

One big mistake that people over look is the power of a guest post on a blog that is related to their niche. You achieve many goals writing a guest post. You get a backlink, you establish yourself as an authority in your niche, you build a relationship with a fellow blogger. In time, there is a lot of power from that blog post. Especially when that site turns into an authority site.

I haven't made my mind up that Google doesn't still count nofollow links as to me it is important to count these links to provide relevant serp's whilst at maybe a reduced value.

It's something I may test in the future. But yes involving yourself in the conversation as long as you know why your doing it is a good thing.
