I can't even imagine how comments on blogs would look like without without Akismet. A friend of mine sent me just yesterday a some post somewhere with no less than 4,519 spammy comments. It attracted more SEM experts than private tutoring providers. We moved the blog over to Wordpress and control it more tightly now. Hard to see how blog comments will be the tail that wags the SEO dog over the long run.
