Is your client requesting for social media marketing as part of your SEO job scope? The competition in SEO industry just got bigger and clients that get the most for their money will continue to support us. But, is social media marketing part of SEO? It is a debating question as many would agree and disagree. I would like share my opinion for this question. In my opinion, SEO is not related to social media marketing and should not be considered as part of your SEO package. Social media marketing and SEO are totally different medium to tackle.
We work on onsite and offsite SEO to rank well in search engine for targeted keywords or keypharases. Search engine bot decides where our site ranks for specific keywords taking into consideration from hundreds of aspects. But, social media marketing deal with real people and not some bots. Same as search engine traffic, social media traffic can go viral too. Social media traffic and search engine traffic is totally different sources and we cannot use the same method for both sides. Bots that have over 200 criteria to rank us well in search engine for certain keywords need to be treated differently compared to social media traffic.
However, social media traffic and PPC programs like Adwords can be linked closely compared to SEO. The advertisement value to get certain number of impressions from ads shown throughout their network sounds similar. Social media marketing is where you can get almost immediate traffic with a boost but for search engine traffic, it will increase gradually. For beginning, we may not get even one visitors referred from search engine. Many advertisers are still confused over social media marketing and SEO. In my opinion, they are completely different platform and we need to tackle them separately in our marketing strategy.

As long as they give a backlink, a quality link, social media is SEO
Agreed.
In social media if you add the url of your website in different social media sites like twitter and blogcatalog then it gives link juice to your website.
Isn’t is SEO?
Thanks

If it is dofollow, yes it helps. But, common social media sites like blogcatalog, twitter, digg are nofollow.
I agree with you, however clients seems not understand this and usually they see SM as part of it. I think its difficult to explain it to them but you should so that they will not expect it from you.
Yeah, the client seems need some brainstorming about it.
Clients always want to get cheap and best. SEO is getting very competitive and SM becomes part of SEO these day.
Usually, SEO will provide SM as value added service just as an attraction. But, it turn out to be norm practice now.
Yep.. I agree with Dana if we get do follow links, I think it is also part of SEO
Besides social sites can boost visitors to our site as well
Social media sites meant to bring in more traffic and to help faster indexing in search engine. Dofollow social bookmarking helps to get SEO value as it help to increase the number of backlinks a blog post receive.
Social media is SEO as long as they give a dofollow link in my opinion.
It is part of SEO if it gives dofollow link.
