How To Choose Low Competitive Keywords

When it comes to online marketing or online advertising, it is important to choose a proper keyword to run advertisement. It is useful for bloggers too that targets certain niche and keywords to get their post first page in google search results. Choosing a wrong keyword could only lead to failure and we may waste hundreds or thousands of dollars doing it. For example, if you compete for a highly competitive keyword to a new website of yours, it may lead to bad marketing strategy and will further sink your marketing funds and in worst case scenario, it may lead to closure of business.

Choosing a set of right keywords with lowest competition is one of the most important part in SEO too. There are several free keyword analysis tool available, but I’m going to concentrate on Google Adwords Keyword Tool External. It is free, and you can get in-depth analysis of relevant keywords. There are two important sectors that we need to concentrate to choose low competitive keywords.

1. Low Average Monthly Search Volume
2. Low Total Search Results

For example, if you just started a hosting business and choosing “cheap hosting” or “web hosting” as your targeted keyword is not a wise move.

1. Stats for “cheap hosting” – 300k average monthly searches with 16.6 million search results
2. Stats for “web hosting” – 3 million average monthly searches with 170 million search results

Obviously, above keywords are similar to suicide attempt if you targeting to build backlinks and SEO for it on your new website. Instead, you can try to narrow the location to “tampa web hosting solution” or “cheap web hosting reseller program” or “dirt cheap web hosting” etc. Long tail keyword or keypharases with low search results on google gives you better chance to grasp targeted traffic with low competition.

1. Stats for “dirt cheap web hosting” – 400 average monthly searches with 170k search results
2. Stats for “cheap web hosting reseller program” – 300 average monthly searches with 500k search results

If you business is not targeted specific area or location, the best way is to select long tail keywords with low competition. Before starting any link building campaign, make sure to check these two important points on any keyword that you targeting.

Here is the search volume and competition on two keyword phrases

X gets 9000 local and 18000 global per month with low competition

Y gets 40500 local and 49500 global per month with moderate competition.

Y is much more in line with why we do…but clearly the competitive is much higher.

Would you suggest targeting X term with lower volume, but that seems to be a reasonable target in a limited amount of time…or is the fact that Y is more along the lines of what we actually do, better – even if we can only get to page 2 or 3?

    Thanks

    I suggest you choose Y.

There are no point in getting low conversion or zero conversion traffic to our site. Even it is more competitive, but if you feel it have the exact traffic to your site and can give good conversion, why not choose Y?

  3. I agree, however even within the longtail keywords the level of competition varies quite alot. Are there any other free or paid for tools to help you find low competition keywords? I use Google keywords tool – but learnt the hard way to select ‘exact’ search not broad.

There are several keywords tools, free and paid but I still prefer adword keyword tool. Have you tried the beta version? You need to log in to your adwords account, select tool -> keyword tool. There you will see the option of beta version. You can even monitor mobile traffic with this tool.

That is one of the hardest keyword to find out. By the time we able to find out, it already gets too competitive. You can try to find out in “finance” “mortgage” “real estate” niche.
