There are many blogs including this blog closes comment section on older posts. I couldn’t manage to control spam comments on this blog especially on older posts. The reason why older posts are easy target for spammers is pagerank (PR). This is a keywordluv dofollow blog and most of the older posts gained some PR value. This is a shortcut to get a dofollow backlink from high PR pages. The moment one comment gets approved; you can see hundreds of new comments will flow to that particular post especially if the post gained high PR. So, the only way to control this is to disable comment section and stop worrying about it.
Some dofollow blogs disable comment section on posts older than 3 months, 6 months or one year. Personally, I disable the comment section on posts older than 30 days. This is not healthy for a blog in long run. We need comments as it helps our blog to grow in size of new contents added daily. The more contents left on comment section, the more it will help our posts to appear in almost any funny keyword searched on search engines. Content is so important and that is why blog admins are willing to give dofollow backlink to commentators as a token of appreciation.
Nowadays, I noticed that almost 70%-80% comments are made using keyword in name section. Ok, that is fine; it will help your SERP ranking. Not many will read full 300 words of blogpost but only the title and by reading other people’s comment before commenting just to get a dofollow backlink. This is unhealthy and is not productive to grow with unique contents. It will only cause furter damage to the blog. Imagine if a commenator’s link is pointing to some bad neighborhood site which can lead to penalty. Running a dofollow blog is certainly a risk that we all take if the commentator starts using names and links that are related to porn, gambling, etc.

I have a PR2 site which I optimize it for organic traffic but I do not know how to monetize it. Sigh. All I can do is earn from a CPA. And the CPA is paying me so little. Feeling so frustrated. I guess SEO is just one part of internet marketing.
the best way to utilize your precious time in the best possible way. By doing so, you can keep a check on tons of spam comments.
Yes, it is. But, how long you can do that if the rate exceed 100comments/day.
I don’t mind the comments. It’s the “over-indulgent self-promotion.” Please make a relevant comment and “keep it moving.” . No need to throw unrelated keywords or list 3-4 article URL’s. Please!
I also make a point of investigating what site they have linked to. I see that other sites are visiting Source Blogger before they approve my comments too.
I hate to see comments with links in it. There are name, email and url section given for the commentators to fill instead using the comment body section.
Yeah kill those spammers
..Nice information.
It does but not so healthy for our blog to grow.
Yes, no follow is a good solution for spammers. There are many who post irrelevant content just for taking links from high PR blogs/sites.
I agree. It is like putting a stop sign for spammer.
I think closing comments is the best way to utilize your precious time in the best possible way. By doing so, you can keep a check on tons of spam comments.
Yes, it was. But, when it comes to new content generating method from new comments, I still prefer not to close the comment section.
I don’t close my comment section!
Great! You are doing good. I always wish to do that and able to do it now. It feels so good to see some of our old posts can still get some nice comments.
Yes this is a reason to close comments and it is a big and old problem. And if the blogs have high PR this problem become more big.
Obviously, turning off dofollow helps too. I prefer to turn off dofollow instead of comments.
just use spam filter to protect our blog
Sometimes, spam filter block legitimate comments too. So, it is not always best to depend fully on spam filters.
Oh, so that is the reason why you disable comment after 30 days. It is a old problem, do follow comment form always attract spam comment. Especially if the site/blog have high PR.
I agree. It is good for a new blog to turn dofollow to attract traffic and more comments. But, when it is not controllable scale, it is time to think reconsider dofollow.
