Google hates it as it also similar to harvesting backlink farms. It is not natural and in most cases it will lead to penalties. There are always some newbies that wanted to try auto-mass comment service to get backlinks or to improve SERP ranking instantly. I must say that Akismet is a great tool to combat spam comments. But, there are some genuine comments still stuck in Akismet spam box. It is tiring to check for one legitimate comment from hundreds of spam comments.

WP-Ban is one of the best tool that helped me to get rid of spam comments easily. I have noticed that most of the spam comments are made from several identical IP addresses. After blocking these IPs, I got shocked to see that each one IP have attempted more than 20 times a day. I wonder how many spam comments each IP would send in a year. You can always monitor the “IP attempts” once blocked using this plugin on your wordpress. Use this wordpress plugin to ban IP of spam comments easily. If you have not tried this method, try to block at least 10 IPs that frequently send you spam comments. You will be so much relieved on the next day when you check your wordpress admin panel.

It is common to see this kind of comments if your blog is in common niche like SEO, Real estate, health, etc. It will be more targeted for comment spamming if it’s dofollow blogs. Akismet plugin is a must tool for all dofollow blogs. Now, I am strongly suggesting WP-Ban plugin or any other IP ban plugin is a must tool too for dofollow blogs. Don’t leave the burden of filtering spam comments to Akismet alone. Share it with IP ban plugins. Combination of these two plugins will help you save a lot of time filtering spam comments.

But, it will harm others good commentators that unfortunately use share IP with spam commentators.

    • total fta says:

I actually did not get your point? how good commentators can share same IP with spammers?

      • LetUpdate says:

There are many internet users share same proxy server or same NAT IP address to access internet. If you block the IP adress because detect some spam from it, all others good users that use that proxy or Nat IP adress will blocked too.

I agree. I try to keep it minimum on IP to block. So far, I only block 20 IPs, able to reduce almost 98% spam comments (average of 200 spam comments each day).

      • Atniz says:

That is a problem. But, usually spammers use same IP. I have blocked almost 20 IPs and reduce almost 98% (that is about 200 spam comments a day).

    • Atniz says:

Yes, it is. I’m using dynamic IP Internet connection too. But, from blocking top 20 IP that frequently sent spam comments, I have reduced almost 95% of spam comments. Usually, spammers use same IP. You can see how many attempts have been made by this IPs.

  3. I can see your getting the odd spam comment because your using keywordluv. I feel your pain mate…using Bad Behavior and Akismet at least kills off the obvious spammers :p

I totally agree with you. I had to use this plugin too to solve those spam comments. It’s true that sometimes akismet marks genuine comments as spam. And Its frustrating to check hundreds of spam comments to look for genuine ones. Thanks for this info!

  7. A good post – thanks. Any method of reducing spam to WP blogs is a good thing. Askimet does a good job, but WP blogs are highly targetted by spammers and you need to stay vigilant.
