Renew Domain To Increase SERP Ranking

increase-serp-ranking-domain-renewalI have read in many places that domain expiry date have no effect on search engine optimization (SEO). They even declared that search engine (SE) have dropped domain expiry in search engine results page (SERP) ranking calculation. I believed that too until I have tried on my own. Atniz dot com domain was going to expire in 2 months+. So, I run a simple experiment on this topic. As you all know, I am working on “Work At Home” keyword and optimize my blog to rank well for this keyword.

It is highly competitive keyword with more than 2 million average monthly search from google. With 36k+ backlinks, I manage to rank this blog at #15-17 on google.com When you reach top spot (TOP 20-30 SERP ranking), it is hard to move forward as you need more quality backlinks to even move one step forward in SERP ranking. I was constantly moving around #15-20 position on google.com for this keyword.

After renew this domain for 2 years, I monitored the ranking, it was still the same. Domain registrar need time to process our renewal. Also, bots need to get this information too. Right after 2 days from my renewal date, my SERP ranking on google.com moved to #8-9 for both “work at home” and “work from home” keywords. There are several other keywords SERP ranking for Atniz have been improved as well. The theory seems to be working out well there.

Have you done this before? Are you monitoring your SERP ranking for any highly targeted keywords? Try this method if your domain is near to expire. I’m sure you will be amazed with the results too.

I have read that you will rank better if you renew the domain for an extended period of time, they penalize sites that only renew for 1 year. Any credence to that?

I would think they look at it as not as important because you only renewed for a year. This topic and blog does make me wonder?

I believed that too. But, it is tested and proven on this blog serp ranking. I have extended the period to 2 years. I guess, longer is better.

Not penalize. Just, you get to increase some credit in SERP ranking. Not penalties involved here. If penalties involved, I’m sure we can’t find our blog in top 1000 results page either.

Actually, I have read about it in DP forum. One of the good authority member have posted about it on his experience extending domain period. I always have notice on websitegrader.com too about having longer domain expiry (usually more than one year is good). So, I decided to try it on this blog, since it was near to expiry. It works. Maybe, you can try it too. I’m sure you will see some serp ranking boost there.

I did notice a slight improvement around the time when I added two years to my domain registrations and got a dedicated IP address. Of course, things are always moving around and changing so I can’t be sure if that’s the reason for the ranking boost, but I think the extra few bucks a year is probably worth it as an investment into your sites.

It seems to be really interesting fact and a very useful piece of information if it actually works, having no effect on your SERP and Page rankings even if your domain is not renewed or has expired or may be under renewal.May be there is certain timeperiod provided by google like if your account does not get renewed in 4 days or a week you may face adverse results and loose your current position as well. Its highly risky!

Famous domain registrars won’t take time up to 4 days to renew our domains. I got my domain extension for .com within few hours. It is not high risk if we just extend our domain. It will be high risk if we lost the domain expiry date. Dropped domain always have bad seo points.

Well Atniz I know that the time for domain registration is valued by SE’s. For example if you registered a domain for 5 or 10 yrs then Google knows its a good one but if you registered for 1 or 2 yrs Google starts doubting…is it a throw away domain…

    Anyway thanks

I find that all a bit difficult to believe! why would google want to effect their results based on your renewal timing. im sure other factors are invovled

    Atniz Reply:

There are so many other factors involved. Of all, backlinks plays the most important role. I agree with you. But, domain extension also plays some role in SERP ranking. There are still many don’t believe in it yet. It is tested and proven and it’s working.

It is not a promotion. But, I personally saw the results on this domain. No matter how many links I build, I can’t get out of #17-#20 circle. Renewing the domain, gets me to top #7-#10
