Real Purpose Of PageRank
Pagerank (PR) does not pass any search engine results page (SERP) ranking value. Even, nofollow link with hyperlinked helps to push SERP ranking in other search engine than Google. PR link that is a link without rel=”nofollow” tag only passes PR value that can increase PR in next google update. If PR does not increase SERP ranking in google, then what is the real purpose of PR introduction? Of course, PR is calculated from dofollow backlinks therefore it could be crawled and indexed by google and get PR credit contributed.
To me, PR is just a trophy by google. It is used to boast among competitors in the same niche in some coffee talk. I don’t want to have PR1 when my close competitor has PR6. So, I will try my best to get at least PR5 or 6 to look even with my competitors. So far, I can only see one logical reason for someone to hunt good PR. Comparison among competitors and ego problem of having high PR is the only reason people hunt for higher PR. If you have already able to beat your competitor in SERP ranking even though your PR is lower than your competitor, is PR really matters to you anymore?
With existence of dofollow blogs, forums, website, directories, social bookmarking sites, ping, etc – There are plenty of ways to generate dofollow backlink that will get crawled by google bot and get indexed. This dofollow link will contribute PR juice and represent in next google PR update. It’s been almost 5 years, Google introduced nofollow tag. Still, there are several ways we can buy, create dofollow links instead of getting organic backlinks. Does it mean that nofollow rules failed? What is your thought about this?

Hello Reena,
i have seen the same with my One Minute Guide-blog. It has PR 0 in April when i started to write about the difference of pandemic and epidemic (because of H1N1). I was overwhelmed by the search engine results. In the first week i ranked on Nr.1 in Google, in front of the World Health Organisation (WHO). I couldn’t believe it. How does it come that a newbie gets on Nr. 1 when there are so many famous other webpages with the same topic.
At the moment i have fallen back to Page 2 or 3 for “what is pandemic and epidemic” but now i have PR1 for that article. This seems to be strange *lol*.

I’ve seen many a person go mad over the Google PR of a website, I agree that it is just like a trophy, I’ve read blogs that are very interesting with small PRs and other sites that are complete rubbish with massive PRs, so at the end of the day it’s not that important..

Nowadays, they can even fake the PR. So, it does not really serves the purpose there. I noticed a few sites that is meant to sell links with dofollow but have high fake PR. I wonder how many will fall prey to this scammers.

Trust me, it is the best to rank better in SERP compared to getting high pagerank. More traffic equals to more money too.

PR has a big role in SERP. Let say two sites (Site A and Site B) are targeting the same keyword. site A has PR 5 and Site be has PR 3. Site A will have better SERP than Site B. Of course this has many other factors as well. But, if we assume that both sites are doing the same work regards to SEO.
You can still get better results with low PR, if you are aiming for long tail keywords. Keywords that are not very competitive.

You got the whole thing wrong here. I suggest you to try on googling a set of 10 keywords as trial and monitor the first 10 results you get. PR have no direct role in SERP ranking.

PR only matters in high-stakes KW sets like “Acai Berry” or “Ring Tones”……..in my world, its a moot point because a PR O can achieve the same SERP as a PR 4 for “Sacramento DJs”.

Usually, google gives new sites to rank well for few weeks before settling them to their respective place in serp ranking.

I prefer to have lower PR but higher traffics to my site. PR actually doesn’t mean too much. But most people are still unaware of this issue

Me too. I prefer to get top ranking in Google SERP ranking compared to PR. Either way, there are always advertisers willing to pay some money for a link from our site.
