Yahoo Buzz and SezWho Drags Your Blog Down
Recently, I noticed that the download rate slows down waiting for YahooBuzz and SezWho. A visitor comes to our blog to read and not to wait for all those less productive plugins to show up. I have removed both plugins (SezWho and Yahoo Buzz) and noticed that the download rate is much than usual. Of course, speed is another important key for a blog’s success. Nobody wants to wait 1 minute or more for a blog to show up it’s contents. I would rather close the site and go on to other sites.
If you notice your site is slow in loading, check the status message at the bottom of your Firefox browser. Anything that drags down its loading process, you must evaluate for its existence in our blog. For me, these two plugin really drags down the loading time for the whole page to appear. So, I got no choice but to remove those plugins to better support my visitors. I’m sure most of Entrecard users install SezWho and Yahoo Buzz plugin. Now, it is time to re-evaluate on both applications importance to our blog.
Load time is very important for a blog’s success. It is better to have 10 good plugins that helps your blog to load faster and give credits to your visitors rather than having 100 useless plugins that will just drag our blog’s load time way down.

For choosing blog themes, it also applies to choose the theme with the most of the desired features already built in. Because if you choose a theme with few features and then compensate by adding too many plugins, the result is also a slow loading site.

I don’t know much about themes here. Anyway, good advice. Planning to change my theme also but not yet. Any good place to get 3 column free themes with minimal ad links for wordpress?

It is not uploading speed only, the most important is download speed. The loading time needed to download pages and other plugins in queue will be slowed by certain plugins.

I’ve not seen this with my blog, but for sure with other websites. A tool I just found over the weekend is Google Chrome’s “javascript console” – under the developer menu. Load this up, then go and reload the page you are testing, then you can see a timing plan for the different elements on the page. Now you can see EXACTLY which parts are slowing things down!
Why spend a lot of time on a great looking blog if no-one is going to wait for it to arrive??

I don’t use Chrome that frequently. Do you have any other plugin that works with Firefox to detect loading elements? Really appreciate your help here.

Sorry to hear about what happened on your blog. I never had that SezWho plugin on my blog because I’d rather have them comment on my blogs rather than just tick the marker to rate the post.
Good thing you already removed it on your blog. I agree with you in keeping few but useful tools rather than having all those useless blings on your page.

I’ve been using SezWho since Entrecard joined with them. I am very happy to see the ranking system and comment tracking. But, not all comments are tracked by SezWho. There are some glitch that we can ignore but not the speed.

Yep, I had the same problem with SezWho. There doesn’t seem to be any benefit to it as far as I can tell, so I removed it.

Looks like we both feel the same here. Are you planning to use any other comment tracking application?

Well there is intrablog (within one blog) commenting and interblog (across several blogs) commenting. I would dearly love a better intrablog commenting system for blogger. I may even write one. But I really don’t get the whole interblog comment tracking. Who does it benefit? The blog publisher? Maybe. Maybe you can spot “quality commenters” and encourage them to stay. But I mean, what can you do really? Stalk them. It’s only benefit seems to be for stalkers. So no. No interblog commenting for me.

It have it’s reason. For stalkers or owners, but for me I prefer speed compared to comment ranking and tracking system.

hey,
this is Jitendra from SezWho…We take the loading speed very seriously.
We recently upgraded the infrastructure to improve the performance.

What kind of load times were you seeing?
Also you should try setting up the sezwho to use local copy of css and js and testing the performance as well.
let me know what you find out at jitendra@sezwho.com

Sorry to give you a bad news here. I have been using your service for a few months now. Thank you so much for your service and I couldn’t ask more as I’m getting it for free.
I have removed a few slow loading plugins and out of all, Yahoo Buzz and SezWho is one of the slowest load time plugins in my blog. I do not whether the new upgrade automated in wordpress plugin or need manual installation. But, I don’t see much difference there.

Atniz,
Are you using 2.2 version of the plugin (I think you were but I am not 100% sure) that has the option to use local css and js …This will address all loading speed issues.
I am sorry to hear your experience with the loading…I haven’t heard about loading issues for a while, since we fixed it about 2-3 months back.
In any case, thanks for the feedback and let me know if we can do anything else.

I haven’t installed the SezWho plug-in, but I thought about it when EC integrated with it. I don’t have a lot of unnecessary plug ins in my site for the very reason that I found sites which had a lot took forever to load. I do have a few widgets that are strictly because I like them, but I’ll delete anything that slows the site down noticeably. I have noticed that Izearanks will sometimes hang and cause the site to slow. I’m doing a re-design right now and will decided whether to keep it or junk it once I test it with the new site.
Good blog post

It’s been long time since Entrecard motivates us to install SezWho. It is good to stay clear and use only extremely useful plugins to our site.

Thank you Atniz, this post is really an eye opener for me.
The widgets that dragged my loading time were:
Sharethis
Mybloglog
Twitter counter
Google Analytics
Google Adsense
Out of which sharethis was dragging too much. I removed all of them except Adsense and now it’s pretty fast.

I’m sure there is a similar plugin for Firefox, or I think netmechanic.com have something similar – not sure on that one, but there are online tools to do the same thing. Maybe someone else on here can give you a link.
BUT – I would get Chrome on your machine and make a habit of double checking your websites – it’s amazing what a mess a couple of lines of css can make of your perfect (IE) site. For me – Firefox is about 30% of traffic and Chrome is almost 10% with IE being about 60% – so I want to make sure my webpages show up properly in all three of those.
