Choosing a Proper Domain Name
Choosing a perfect domain can be one of the hardest tasks in establishing online sites. Getting a proper domain will be not easier if we already have an offline business and would like to have an online rep site. For example, I own a company name Sony and would like to have sony.com online site for my company. This will be one tough job. Because getting the domain that is same as our company name might cost a lot if it is not unique.
However, there are other options of suffix like .net, .cc, .info, .biz, .tv, etc that you can choose from. But, I would strongly suggest going for .com if it is targeted for global market. If you go to your Firefox address bar, and just type “atniz” and press “Ctrl+Enter”, it will automatically add .com as suffix and open up the page. It is the first suffix that will come in anyone’s mind. Unless, if you are targeting for UK market, then you can go for .co.uk or Malaysian market, you can go for .com.my If it is for global market, then .com is the most preferred domain suffix in the market.
If you could get a four letter or 5 letter domains in dot com, then it is easier to remember compared to longer words. But, getting a domain name that contains the niche keyword will be the best choice if you are looking for better SEO or SERP. For example, if you want to run a diabetic site, you could choose diabeticsolutions.com or etc. On the other hand, this method does not play well in every channel. Let’s say, your target is for adult business, then you might choose pornsite.com or porntv.com for better SEO.
But, most of the Firewall will block any adult related sites that have sexual words in the domain. So, getting higher traffic might be a little hard compared to having a normal domain name for sensitive business. Sensitive business that I mention here could be from adult sites, proxies, chatting, social networking sites, etc. This kind of sites mostly will be blocked in schools, universities, colleges and workplaces.

Choosing a domain isn’t an easy task as most good domain names are usually taken. This is one process that takes quite a bit of my time since I don’t go for anything other than .com. So you can imagine how difficult it is to find a good one..

Some good advice. Even if you’re targeting a UK (or other country-specific market), I think it’s worthwhile registering the .com (if possible) any way, just because it’s the default domain most people will look for.

I totally agree with all that you said here.
Particularly “If you could get a four letter or 5 letter domains in dot com, then it is easier to remember compared to longer words..”
GritFX were lucky to be able to secure our domain, and a number of other online URLs (ie, squidoo lens, Myspace page) using our name – which is nice and short like you suggested.
Our problem – getting the word out about who/what we are! We certainly do not have a “niche keyword” – but maybe/hopefully it will become one some day soon
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us all.

Yes, it is best if you choose a .com domain. I myself always automatically type .com for every domain that I want to visit. It’s instinct. It’s a habit.

Aside from a habit, .COM is the suffix that normally understand by visitors as a website. They prefer to visit it rather than other suffix available. However, as Google is changing this coming year which focus on more specific geographical location of the site, domain choosers should consider localization of the domain.

HI,
Exactly choosing a domain name requires utmost care. If it is by the name of company itself than it will serve as a online patent & it also works as a online marketing tool for the company.

Yes, never underestimate the importance of a good domain name. I know tons of guys who specialize in buying keyword rich names, and then after building them up to just a 1 or 2 pr put them up for auction…smart people know that it is so much easier to get a site with a good name to rank for targeted keywords.

Spelling is important too. I’ve told this story before but one time I thought I found the perfect domain. I don’t own it anymore but I registered NitchDomain.com. I was very excited until I realized I didn’t know how to spell Niche
